The beauty and awesomeness of God’s Names, part 2

Psalm 91:14
“Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name

As we study the Names of God in the scriptures, we can see just how precious and wonderful God is to us. We saw how amazing Jehovah Jireh is. Now let’s look at some other of His glorious Names.

Jehovah-Shalom means “the Lord our peace” In Judges 6:24 when Gideon was frightened by the appearance of The Angel of the Lord, the Angel said to him, “Peace, do not be afraid.” Gideon built an altar to the Lord, Jehovah-Shalom. God is our peace. Even though we might be experiencing storms all around us, we can experience the peace that passes understanding because Jehovah Shalom is with us. He never leaves nor forsakes us!

Jehovah-Rophe is “the Lord who heals.” In Exodus 15:26 God says to the children of Israel in the wilderness, “I am the Lord, who heals you.” Jehovah-Rophe not only heals the body, He restores the soul as well.

Jehovah-Tsidkenu means “the Lord our righteousness.” God says in Jeremiah 33:15-16, “In those days and at that time I will make a righteous Branch sprout from David’s line; he will do what is just and right in the land.” In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. This is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord Our Righteousness.” We are now the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:21)! Even if we were the worst of sinners, In Christ God forgives us, cleanses us and ascribes to us His righteousness. He now sees us clean and blameless in Christ!

“You are with me” — Jehovah-Shammah is the name of God that reminds us that He is present everywhere. In the last chapter of Ezekiel (Ezekiel 48:35) the future City of God is described. The prophet says its name will be Jehovah-Shammah, meaning “the Lord is there.” Jesus promised us that He would never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). This Name reminds us that He is ever with us!

Jehovah-Nissi is “the Lord our banner or our victory.” A banner is something that is lifted high so that people can see it and respond. In Exodus 17:15 after a great battle with the Amorites. Moses erected an altar and named it Jehovah-Nissi. He was recognizing that it was the Lord who won the battle. This name can also be correctly translated “the Lord is our victory.” In Christ, we have the victory because He defeated death, hell and the grave. We live because He is forever alive and reigns forever more!

Jehovah-M’Kaddesh is the Lord who sanctifies. Leviticus 20:7-8 says, “Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the Lord your God (That is to say, ‘I am Jehovah-M’Kaddesh’). Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord, who makes you holy.” God in Christ has set us apart for His Glory! We are consecrated by the Holy Spirit Who has sealed us for the day of redemption. We belong to Him. We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people by His grace and kindness!

There are many other names attributed to God in the scriptures. Each one reveals one of His attributes and nature. However, it can all be summed up in this one statement: God is Love! His love is revealed in His Names. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whoever would believe in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You so much for Who You are and all that You have done for me in Christ. The more I study your Names, the more I realize just how much You love me. I am so grateful to You for your everlasting kindness and tender mercies, which You bestow on me each and every day. I bless and praise Your Holy Name both today and every day! In Jesus’ Name, I pray, Amen.
